20091021: Mobile internet in the US
-{Citizen}- Falcore: I only have a laptop, and it works perfectly in my
truck.
-{Citizen}- Abdalan: How's the wifi at stops Falcore?
-{Citizen}- Falcore: I have an aircard, works better.
-{Citizen}- Abdalan: Oh, mobile wifi?
-{Citizen}- Rosuav: 3G?
-{Citizen}- Falcore: Wifi at truck stops isn't cheap
-{Citizen}- Abdalan: Really
-{Citizen}- Falcore: yes 3G and it is mobile
-{Citizen}- Abdalan: That's a shame, I dunno how competetive trucks stops
are but you'd think it would be
-{Citizen}- Falcore: cost about 5 bucks aday for wifi at most.
-{Citizen}- Abdalan: Yeah fuck that
-{Citizen}- Abdalan: Don't truck stops come in chains?
-{Citizen}- Falcore: Yes, Flying J, Pilot, TA, Petro, Loves.
-{Citizen}- Abdalan: they should sell plans
-{Citizen}- Gadiantor: Out in the sticks there are still some mom and pop
truck stops.
-{Citizen}- Abdalan: Up here too
-{Citizen}- Abdalan: At least, they say they are, they might be chains for
all I know
-{Citizen}- Falcore: They do, but you have to stop at their place to use
it. You don't always stop at their places.
-{Citizen}- Rosuav: Yeah, but hey - why bother with a wifi plan when you
can get a 3G plan? Not as fast, but you can use it in more
places.
-{Citizen}- Abdalan: What I really know about them is that they have great
cheap breakfast 24hrs a day
-{Citizen}- Falcore: I am sitting right now in a Drop Lot for my company in
Washington. No WiFi, but I love having this card.
-{Citizen}- Rosuav gives it a thumbs up.
-{Citizen}- Rosuav: What's your provider? Is the service reliable?
-{Citizen}- Falcore: Sprint and it is the best for internet.
-{Citizen}- Falcore: I also have my blackberry incase I need a 911 fix of
the net.
-{Citizen}- Abdalan: Not that I'm accusing you of driving and threshing but
how's aircard coverage on the roads?
-{Citizen}- Rosuav: Nothing wrong with leaving Thresh up while you drive,
and looking at it at all the red lights...
-{Citizen}- Rosuav whistles innocently
-{Citizen}- Falcore: I have only done it once while driving because I was
only running down the street. Other then that, I am unsure.
To unsafe to try and do it. No only that, I don't need to hit
a roaming spot and screw myself.
-{Citizen}- Abdalan: And I wasn't curious so much for backseat threshing
purposes but more wondering if internet along roads could be
used for tracking and accountability purposes
-{Citizen}- Rosuav: It definitely can, Abs, at least here. If you have a
GPS system and 3G internet, you could set up a back-to-base
monitor like some of the money transporters have... actually,
the HTC Dream has both those facilities, so it's possible
there's an Android app to do it.
